Enmeshed
gumtrees
The prime of their life
Soaring in the skies
Like husband and wife
Surrounded in green
The healthy and strong
Roots going deep
A bay they belong
Fresh air they breathe
The space they seize
From clouds they drink
And earth they eat
But who can explain
What then transpired
Their leaves withering
Slowly aside
Branches dieback
Bark turning grey
Towering skeletrees
Frozen in place
A stark reminder
To all who pass by
Of sober reality
But who can say why
