An eastern barred and banned coot
Which hide in grass by day
Standing out in standing hay
Was spotted prey for sport and loot
A brown and wedged and tailing wing
Which hide in height by day
Ripping flesh to feed its young
Still prays thy bread and kingdom come
And I still being an omnivore
Creep now shy by day
Though named A’dam the sixth they say
A man now marked by boot and ban
This Western marred and bandied coot
Survived the scene on foot
Where claws that ripped his soul and more
There striped his hide as with a coal
The bloodycoot in the littered soil
Dismembered body bare
The ground now bears the marks and cries
Yet Abel, restless, wanders abroad
